Production of Organic Liquid Fertilizer

The use of organic fertilizer is gradually replacing conventional fertilizers in farms simply because they are eco-friendly and cost-effective. More importantly, the raw materials used for the production of organic fertilizer are readily available, hence farmers can produce themselves on farms or purchase already packaged ones. Organic fertilizers will steadily supply adequate nutrients without causing soil and environmental degradation. The main objective of this post is help farmers produce liquid fertilizer using locally available materials, produce safe food and reduce cost of production.

Our core values at Kaspharyn Solutions, Nigeria is to deliver bespoke solutions and quality services in protected cultivation, green organic agriculture and postharvest activities using locally available resources optimally and economically.

Consequent upon that, we produced liquid fertilizer that can be used in soil culture and/or soilless culture (Organic Hydroponics). This liquid fertilizer is called Fermented Manure Tea (FMT) or Fermented Manure Extract (FME). FMT is able to supply Nitrogen (N), Potassium (K), Phosphorus)P), Calcium (Ca) and micronutrients in appreciable amount. FMT can be used at vegetative stage, flowering stage or fruiting.m stage. The ingredients used can be tweaked to fit into each of the stages.

At Kaspharyn Solutions, Nigeria, we mass-produce FMT for farms on request, we retail to smallholder farmers and we train farmers, agripreneurs and students (i.e. SIWES, IT students, undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates) on the production of FMT.

How to Produce Fermented Manure Tea (FMT)

Materials

The following materials are needed for FMT production;

1. 230L Blue thick Drum,

2. Dried pure poultry droppings (25kg)

3. Wood Ash (2 Shovels)

4. Calcium Carbonate Powder (1 Shovel)

5. Molasses (7-10L)

6. Unchlorinated Water (150-200L)

7. IMOs (1 Teaspoon)

8. LAB (200ml)

Methodology

1. Put all the materials identified above in a 230L blue drum one after the other starting from 2 to 8. The water you added into the drum should not be filled to brim, fill the water to 150L.

2. Stir vigorously using strong wood or plastic and stir 2-3 times in a day. By day two, microbial activities would have increased causing the drum content to foam and rise. Stir intermittently if you notice this. Top up the water when the foaming and rising have subsided.

3. By day 7-10, the FMT is ready for use. Sieve the FMT using Muslin cloth before use.

4. Use 0.5-1L of FMT in 16L of water. You can adjust as required.

5. Ensure you conduct the preparation in a cool dark place
